Behind the B - for Me
I first heard about B Corp through a former colleague while working at FULFIL Nutrition. We were starting to look at what our sustainable strategy might be, and wanted to be able to rely on a framework to guide us.
So, we headed off to a B Corp event hosted at the Patagonia shop in Dublin. Companies such as UrbanVolt and Moyee Coffee were there sharing their success stories and why they believe in the B Corp movement for their teams. It was a very inspiring night, it just clicked - this was the perfect framework to take away the guess work, join a community of mentors, and get started on our sustainability journey. Unfortunately, the impact of Covid shut down our sustainability plans, and I ended up moving on to join the team at fiid.
When I first met with Shane Ryan, CEO of fiid, he knew all about the B Corp movement and was setting this as a goal for the business. I personally took on the B Corp journey and got stuck into the assessment. It was the perfect way for me to join a team and learn everything about why we did things, what we wanted to achieve, and ensure we have the evidence to prove it. We involved the entire team, conducting training sessions about what the B Corp movement was all about and why we were setting our sights on certification. Over a couple of months I gathered all our data, dug into business operations, fact checked reports and policies, spoke with countless B Corp contacts and mentors, and finally it was time to submit!
Ah- what a feeling. Then the wait for verification began…luckily as a smaller business this only took a few months. I met with an Analyst from B Lab and had a review call, with a couple actions to follow-up on. Long story short, after a few more months of waiting, fiid was certified as the highest scoring B Corp in Ireland, with a score of 106.2. It was an amazing feeling for myself and the team!
I believe in the B Corp movement and it’s ability to transparently hold businesses accountable for their impact. It an all encompassing assessment of your business operations and provides a framework to take out the guesswork- a no brainer for me.
Throughout this journey I’ve become connected within the B Corp movement in Ireland and UK, formed a relater specific B Corp group, hosted B Corp Masterclasses and proudly joined the first cohort of trained Irish B Leaders.
Now, the next step (and probably biggest for me) - starting Impactful Insights. I’m so so excited to be at this stage of my own B Corp journey and looking forward to supporting businesses through their own. I hope to partner with businesses so we can create an economy that understands and acts on our social and environmental impacts- conducting business as a force for good.
I’m only getting started, but so so excited for what’s the come!
